• Sometimes you have to laugh at how mainstream perceives topics related to the adult industry. For one thing, they never seem to talk to real adult industry professionals. Even when they do, they tend to only speak to the 10% margin that includes Larry Flynt, Steve Hirsch and Paul Fishbein. Flynt and Hirsch are hardly the “average” adult producer . . . and Fish? Well, Fish is in publishing, never has produced content and frankly his experience with many things adult, beyond AVN (mag and awards) and the trade shows, is diluted through a string of third hand information.

Today, Reuters did a story on dot triple x, the new domain extension that is coming fully online in December of 2011. And for a change, they may have actually gotten some of it right.

This line says it all, IMO:

Porn and mainstream businesses alike complain they are being forced to buy domain names they don’t want, don’t need and won’t use — and compare the process to a hold-up.

At its heart, that’s all this new domain group is – a hold-up/shake down. There is no reason to expect this sTLD to generate any more revenue for online adult content than a .com extension will ever produce. The “creators” of this lame excuse of a money grab (I C M, which I refuse to give free publicity to) can’t even tell the adult business community what benefits it is supposedly going to extend, beyond costing over 89% more than a .com. Heaven knows many professionals in the adult space have tried to get answers from the cat in charge of this cyber shake down, and all of them have ended up getting either ignored or some form of spin that doesn’t even match the company line found on their website.

Well, all you really need to know as a new adult producer thinking about staking out your cyber-empire, is that you do not need a dot triple x domain. The people behind the dot triple x domain extension will try to scare you into thinking that your brand will be hijacked if you don’t have one, or they will try to sell you on how profitable;e it will be to have one . . . But over all, it’s just a whole lot of money for an untested and silly “vanity” license.

Save your $150+ dollars and put it towards shooting the best quality smut that you can produce and marketing it really well. That is the REAL asset in adult, your company brand and the quality that it stands for, not the domain extension that it resides on.

    Have a great week!

  • Sometimes there is only word that sums up an emotion, and in this case it is F U C K – as in FUCK dot xxx!

ICANN has given in to the money grubbing plans of one Mr. S. Lawley that is trying to create a “porn ghetto” by implementing the domain extension .xxx. Otherwise known as a sponsored top-level domain (sTLD), this is merely the extension used to designate special interest web domains, like /com (commercial, .gov (government), .tv (television – which went nowhere fast . . . .)

ICANN has approved the creation of this new sTLD, and they have also approved Lawley and his company’s plans to sell these “gold chip” domains for anywhere from $60 – 120 per domain.

So what does this have to do with the new adult CEO? Absolutely nothing. You do not have to purchase one of these costly domains. You should not buy into the fear tactics that are being used to try to force people to buy this sTLD.

    Among the many scare tactics that are being put out there by those that support the new sTLD are;

My Trademark will be hijacked by a squatter!

This is ridiculous. The people that buy up domains for squatting are not going to pay this type of money for one domain. They buy up $10 domains by the hundreds, and then run affiliate programs on them to make a couple of hundred dollars a month for little work. You are in no danger of losing any trademark that you establish, even if someone does purchase that domain name with the .xxx attached. Trademarks are not based on the extension of your domain, or even your website name. They are built by a combination of many things, including; your company name, longevity, type of product, logo and countless other factors.

The best thing you can do to build and protect your trademark, is getting your porn company off the ground as quickly as possible! That will go much further toward protecting your trademark than buying one of these .xxx domains. ;)

If I don’t get an XXX domain, I will lose traffic.

This is nonsense. What do most people assume is following a URL when you say a company has a website? They assume it will end in .COM! StartMyPornCompany. TonyBatman. AVN. Do you immediately think .xxx or .tv or even .net would follow these site names? No, you don’t and neither would I. Additionally, some countries have already made moves to block the entire sTLD when it is implemented.

I have to have a .xxx domain to protect the children!

What is that you say? Dot xxx will protect children? This is categorically false. Any child who is looking for adult material would easily be able to figure out entering .xxx will get them everything they are looking for. Even the “Religious Right” has figured out that bit of fluff propaganda and gets that it won’t be protecting children. If you want to protect children (and rise faster in the search rankings and other good stuff) work with StartMyPornCompany.com and we’ll give you meaningful advice on how to set up your .COM sites so you get the most from your web investment.

All of the REAL industry players have .XXX, so I have to as well!

Regardless of what the media is being led to believe by the people behind .xxx, the majority of the adult industry is not pushing for this sTLD to be made available. Other than a few knee jerk re-activists that must have had nothing better to do with their money, the majority of the adult industry players are saying, “Fuck dot XXX!” No one is going to revoke your newly pressed porn credentials if you skip purchasing this extension. In fact, it makes you appear more savvy and professional than someone that wastes money on this terrible “investment”.

Bottom line – do not give in to the scare tactics and money grab that is going on with this new sTLD. You don’t need it. You don’t want it. Use your money for better things, like shooting the best quality porn that you can produce! We invite you to boycott .xxx, along with the rest of the adult entertainment industry!
