Sometimes you have to laugh at how mainstream perceives topics related to the adult industry. For one thing, they never seem to talk to real adult industry professionals. Even when they do, they tend to only speak to the 10% margin that includes Larry Flynt, Steve Hirsch and Paul Fishbein. Flynt and Hirsch are hardly the “average” adult producer . . . and Fish? Well, Fish is in publishing, never has produced content and frankly his experience with many things adult, beyond AVN (mag and awards) and the trade shows, is diluted through a string of third hand information.

Today, Reuters did a story on dot triple x, the new domain extension that is coming fully online in December of 2011. And for a change, they may have actually gotten some of it right.

This line says it all, IMO:

Porn and mainstream businesses alike complain they are being forced to buy domain names they don’t want, don’t need and won’t use — and compare the process to a hold-up.

At its heart, that’s all this new domain group is – a hold-up/shake down. There is no reason to expect this sTLD to generate any more revenue for online adult content than a .com extension will ever produce. The “creators” of this lame excuse of a money grab (I C M, which I refuse to give free publicity to) can’t even tell the adult business community what benefits it is supposedly going to extend, beyond costing over 89% more than a .com. Heaven knows many professionals in the adult space have tried to get answers from the cat in charge of this cyber shake down, and all of them have ended up getting either ignored or some form of spin that doesn’t even match the company line found on their website.

Well, all you really need to know as a new adult producer thinking about staking out your cyber-empire, is that you do not need a dot triple x domain. The people behind the dot triple x domain extension will try to scare you into thinking that your brand will be hijacked if you don’t have one, or they will try to sell you on how profitable;e it will be to have one . . . But over all, it’s just a whole lot of money for an untested and silly “vanity” license.

Save your $150+ dollars and put it towards shooting the best quality smut that you can produce and marketing it really well. That is the REAL asset in adult, your company brand and the quality that it stands for, not the domain extension that it resides on.
